Software September: news roundup 1

Welcome to Software September 2011! This month I’m focusing on project management software, with a guest post from Curt Finch of Journyx about how software can improve project success, product reviews and news from project management software manufacturers. That’s what I’m starting with today, so here is a round up of what’s been happening over the summer.

Binfire

Binfire, a project management and collaboration tool with offices in Florida, Israel and Romania, released a new version at the end of August. They have introduced real time updates on project pages. For example, if a task is added by somebody and you re in the task tab, you see the change right away. They have also done some redesign on the home and sign up pages.

The tool also has new collaborative features for remote teams. The best feature is probably the collaborative document markup for PDF files. “To collaborate on ineering schematics or other complex documents, the current online doc applications are not practical,” said David Robins, CEO and Founder of Binfire. “Most applications generate PDF files.” Being able to work collaboratively on a PDF is a good step, but someone still needs to take that away and amend the original document as necessary.

“We have also improved the whiteboard and group chat features already released in the previous versions,” Robins added. “Today, we have one of the best interactive whiteboard and group chat solutions in the market. The group chat keeps the history of all your conversations online.”

Wrike

Later in the month I’ll be looking at some work-related apps for iPads, and Wrike now has the capability to work with tablets. The company has released a version for mobile browsers, both iOS and Android, so it should work on most mobile devices.

They’ve also released drag and drop file uploading. One of my colleagues was hugely excited about this: you can drag files from your computer the task in Wrike and they will upload in the background. This is a massive step forward for online applications, as the whole process of having to click each file and twiddle your thumbs while they uploaded one at a time was a big disadvantage for collaborative tools. Wrike also allows you to drag and drop images – very handy for software development projects and product screenshots.

Toms Planner

Remember Tom’s Planner? It is also now iPad and iPhone compatible. The website has been completely revamped since I last took a look at the software, and they now have 50,000 people registered as users and Thomas Ummels, who is behind the product, has moved it to become a real contender as a scheduling tool.

There are product updates on an almost weekly basis, but some of them are quite surprising. For example, until June you had to email the company to ask to change your login email address. Now you can do that yourself. I’m surprised this hadn’t made it into earlier releases, but it is good to know that they are continually improving the product.

Webplanner

Earlier this year I interviewed, Jovia Nierenberg, CEO of Experience in Software, the company behind Webplanner. The product officially launched last month and claims to be “the first project management software on the market to combine social collaboration with a dynamic chart generator for quickly visualizing complex tasks.”

Webplanner Overview

It looks very slick and has a Gantt chart, which is something I have found lacking in some online task management products. It is also unusual in only having one pricing option: $18 per user per month. There is the option for a free account if you want to try it. I wonder if they will add in more pricing plans as the user base grows.

That’s it for today. There will be more project management software news later in the month. In the meantime, let us know in the comments about the sort of features you’d like to see in project management software.
